The completion of Yeovil's new town centre amphitheatre has been delayed until the autumn, Somerset Council has announced. This project is a key part of the council's £24 million Yeovil Refresh regeneration initiative, which includes nearly £10 million in funding from the government's Future High Streets Fund.
Initially, the council had hoped to have the amphitheatre—located at The Triangle, the former site of the town's bandstand—finished by the end of the summer. However, it has now confirmed that the project will not be completed until later in the year. Other ongoing improvements in the area may also face delays.
The amphitheatre, which will feature water installations, is intended to facilitate open-air events in the heart of Yeovil. Additionally, a giant LED screen is set to be installed in front of the amphitheatre following a council decision in November 2023. This screen will be used to broadcast major events, such as sporting matches and royal celebrations, adding a new dimension to the town's public space.
Although the majority of Yeovil residents feel the whole project has been a complete waste of tax payers money and the extra delay comes at no surprise to them.
The bottom end of Yeovil, is full of junkies, tramps and alcoholics, although they seem to be the only ones disappointed with the delay.
One known locally as ' Jungle Jayne' told YRN this morning: ' Well lets hope it's ready for Christmas TV, we have been waiting for ages now for our free access to the big screen.'
