Fire Service Report A Discarded Ciggie Burnt Down Dunelm In Yeovil

Yeovil Dunelm Store Fire Likely Caused by Discarded Cigarette, Fire Service Reports

The fire that damaged the Dunelm store in Yeovil is believed to have been accidentally started outside the building, according to the fire service. Early investigations suggest that the blaze, which broke out on Sunday evening (August 25), was most likely ignited by a discarded cigarette.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 6 p.m., where they found a significant portion of the store’s roof engulfed in flames. The quick response from Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue, supported by Avon and Somerset Police, ensured that the fire was contained, but not before causing considerable damage to the store.

A fire service spokesperson said, "Based on our preliminary investigation, the fire most likely started accidentally outside the building, possibly from a discarded cigarette. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of improper cigarette disposal."

Central Road in Yeovil was temporarily closed as crews battled the fire, and Dunelm has since confirmed that the store will remain closed "until further notice." The incident has dealt a significant blow to the local community, as the Dunelm store is a major draw for shoppers in the area.

While the investigation continues, the fire service is urging the public to be mindful of fire safety, particularly when it comes to disposing of cigarettes and other flammable materials.
