New Changing Places Facility Opens in Yeovil to Support People with Complex Disabilities

A new Changing Places facility, designed to national standards to accommodate people with complex disabilities and mobility challenges, has officially opened at the Quedam Centre in Yeovil. This inclusive space, which includes an adult-sized changing bed, hoist, and additional room for carers, was funded by the UK government’s Changing Places Toilets Fund, with the aim of improving accessibility and dignity for all visitors with special needs.

Somerset Council has highlighted the facility as a "safe, clean, and fully equipped space" that prioritizes the dignity and comfort of users. This new addition is specifically tailored for individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well as those with other disabilities that significantly restrict mobility.

Councillor Federica Smith Roberts, Somerset Council’s lead member for equalities and diversity, praised the facility, saying, “The new Quedam Changing Places facility marks a significant step forward in making Yeovil a more inclusive and accessible town for everyone. We are grateful for the support from the central government’s Changing Places Toilets Fund and look forward to seeing the positive impact this facility will have on visitors to the shopping centre.”

James Tovey, manager of the Quedam Shopping Centre, expressed the centre’s dedication to accessibility: “We are thrilled to see the completion of the Changing Places facility at the Quedam Shopping Centre. This project underscores our commitment to inclusivity and providing essential amenities for all members of our community.”

This new facility, located within the heart of Yeovil’s shopping district, aims to set a standard for accessibility in public spaces, enhancing the shopping experience for those with complex needs and ensuring that Yeovil continues to be a welcoming destination for all.
