Somerset Police Prepare for Major Operation in Yeovil Amid Fears of Potential Disorder

Yeovil, Somerset – A significant policing operation is being planned for Yeovil on Saturday, August 10, as authorities prepare to address potential protests and ensure public safety. Somerset Commander Superintendent Lisa Simpson released a statement today detailing the extensive measures being taken in response to concerns circulating on social media about possible unrest in the town.

Supt Simpson acknowledged the anxiety among Yeovil residents due to the posts and rumors, emphasizing the police's commitment to maintaining peace and security in the area. “We know people are concerned about posts being shared on social media and that there could be disorder in the town on Saturday,” she said. “We would never want to downplay these concerns, and we want the people of Yeovil to feel safe and be free to go about their lives without fear.”

While the police have no concrete evidence of a planned demonstration in Yeovil this weekend, Supt Simpson confirmed that a large-scale operation would be in place to reassure the public and respond swiftly to any signs of trouble. Over 200 officers will be on standby, with additional support from neighboring police forces, as well as mounted, dog, and drone units.

“Given the scenes we have all witnessed take place in towns and cities across the country in recent days, we feel it is proportionate to stand up this operation,” Supt Simpson added, referencing recent unrest in other parts of the UK. She assured residents and visitors that the visible police presence should not be a cause for alarm, but rather a measure to ensure everyone’s safety.

Local engagement has been a key part of the police’s preparation, with the Neighbourhood Policing Team maintaining regular communication with community and faith leaders, as well as local businesses. Supt Simpson noted that many have sought advice on whether to avoid the town centre or take precautions such as boarding up businesses. However, she stressed that the decision to do so lies with the individuals and businesses, based on the information provided by the police.

“We are committed to keeping people updated, and should any new information come to light about any demonstration in Yeovil, we will release this,” she said. Supt Simpson also expressed gratitude to the local community for their continued support and cooperation during these uncertain times, emphasizing that close collaboration with the community is essential to thwart any potential threats of unrest.

As Yeovil prepares for the weekend, the police operation stands as a testament to the commitment to public safety, aiming to ensure that any attempt to disrupt the peace will not succeed.
