Yeovil Man to Be Sentenced for Drink Driving After Colliding with Another Vehicle
A Yeovil man, who was found to be more than three times over the legal drink-drive limit when he hit another vehicle, is set to be sentenced by Somerset Magistrates next month.
Alex Gullis, 35, of Plover Court, was reportedly unsteady on his feet, slurred his speech, and tripped over the kerb when police asked him to exit his car following the incident on Preston Road in Yeovil.
After failing a roadside breath test, a second test at the police station revealed he had 113 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, far exceeding the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
Gullis admitted to drink driving on July 20 when he appeared before Somerset Magistrates.
Prosecutor Giles Tippett stated that police arrived at the scene and identified Gullis, who was driving a Vauxhall Corsa responsible for the crash. "Gullis was unsteady on his feet, swaying, tripping over the kerb, and his speech was slurred," said Tippett. Gullis claimed the accident occurred because he swerved to avoid cats running into the road, as he is a cat lover.
Defending solicitor Greg Peters requested an adjournment for a pre-sentence report, noting that the Probation Service was considering a mental health treatment programme for Gullis. Peters added that the incident was out of character, as Gullis had no prior convictions and was dealing with significant emotional turmoil at the time.
Magistrates have adjourned the case until October 29 for the preparation of the report and have imposed an interim driving ban.
