Liberal Democrat MP Calls for Immediate Ban on Water Company Bonuses Amidst Scandalous Performance Failures
Adam Dance, the Liberal Democrat MP for Yeovil and South Somerset, is demanding an urgent ban on executive bonuses at Wessex Water and South West Water, following shocking revelations that these companies will have to repay millions due to their poor performance. Wessex Water will return £5.3 million, while South West Water faces a staggering £17.4 million in repayments.

These revelations come as Wessex Water serves 95 percent of Dance's constituency, with South West Water covering much of the remainder. The juxtaposition of corporate bonuses and abysmal service is an affront to the residents who have suffered under these companies’ failures.
The call for accountability coincides with the upcoming debate in Parliament over the government’s Water Bill. However, the Liberal Democrats have labeled the bill a “half-measure,” pledging to introduce an amendment that would impose an immediate ban on bonuses for water company executives. This stance reflects a growing frustration among constituents who have endured repeated sewage spills—2,667 reported in Yeovil and South Somerset last year alone.
Dance emphasized the need for this moment to be a “watershed” in the regulation of water companies. “It’s high time we took decisive action against these polluting firms. Their failure to meet basic service standards should not be rewarded with bonuses while local communities suffer from sewage spills and inadequate water management,” he stated.
The ongoing crisis in the water sector cannot be ignored any longer. While these companies continue to benefit financially, the communities they serve are left grappling with environmental hazards and inadequate service. The call for a ban on bonuses is not just a matter of fiscal responsibility; it’s about holding these companies accountable for their actions and prioritising the needs of the public over corporate greed.
Adam Dance MP said: "For too long the Conservatives allowed water companies to ride roughshod over people in Yeovil and South Somerset, pumping their filthy sewage into our waterways all the while the bosses took home massive bonuses.
“That must end. No longer should these people be personally rewarded for failing to protect our local environment all whilst hiking bills on people in our area.
“Disappointingly, the new government’s bill is only a half-measure and nowhere near tough enough on these polluting firms.
“That is why I am proud to support the Liberal Democrats amendment to the bill, which would ban water company bosses' bonuses until leaks are fixed and sewage spills end. Only then will we start to get a fair deal for people here in Yeovil and South Somerset.”

As Parliament prepares to discuss the Water Bill, the pressure is mounting on lawmakers to take decisive action that reflects the realities faced by constituents. Adam Dance’s bold stand against executive bonuses highlights a critical turning point in the fight for accountability and transparency in the water industry. It’s time for the government to listen and act—before more communities are left paying the price for corporate negligence.
