Residents of Yeovil have voiced their frustration, claiming their local police officers present a sloppy and unprofessional image, with some going as far as labelling them the "scruffiest police force in the UK." Concerns have been raised about officers seen patrolling the town with untucked shirts, hands stuffed in their pockets, and a general lack of discipline in their demeanour.
One local, contacting YRN, expressed disappointment at the current state of affairs: "There’s no self-discipline anymore amongst Yeovil’s officers. Back in the day, you wouldn’t catch the likes of ‘Bootsy’ Roberts dressed like that. He was always impeccably turned out, and you could tell he took pride in the uniform."
The nostalgic reference to "Bootsy" Roberts, a well-known figure in the community during his service years, highlights a stark contrast between past and present. Many older residents remember the days when officers not only enforced the law but also upheld a strong sense of pride and professionalism, serving as role models in their appearance and behaviour.
Another resident shared their concerns about how this affects public perception. "When you see an officer looking dishevelled, it doesn’t inspire confidence. It makes you wonder if they’re as careless about their duties as they are about their uniforms."
Some locals suggest that the issue reflects deeper problems within the force, such as diminished morale or lack of resources for proper training and supervision. Others, however, believe it’s simply a case of modern attitudes undermining traditional values.
A spokesperson for the local police station wasn't available as our reporter could not get through on the phone.
This isn’t the first time Yeovil residents have raised concerns about changes in their police force. However, the current outcry emphasises a longing for the days when officers like "Bootsy" Roberts were seen as the embodiment of professionalism and respectability.
For now, the community hopes the force will take note and make efforts to restore a sense of pride in their presentation, ensuring that first impressions of Yeovil’s officers match the dedication they bring to their work.
