Yeovil Wine Lovers Could Be In For A Treat: Plans Submitted For New Winery and Visitor Centre Near Yeovil
Wine enthusiasts in Yeovil could soon have a new local destination to indulge their passion, as plans have been submitted for the development of a winery, visitor centre, and tasting space near Yeovil.
The proposed winery will be located at Border Farm, on Closworth Road in Halstock, with plans currently under review by Dorset Council. The development, put forward by the Halstock Ridge Vineyard Farm Partnership, aims to revitalize the site, replacing several derelict farm buildings with modern facilities designed to enhance both wine production and tourism.

The ambitious project will be completed in two phases. The first phase involves demolishing the outdated agricultural buildings, some of which are in a state of disrepair and contain asbestos, and replacing them with a "Tasting Barn." This barn will act as a visitor centre and retail space, where wine will be available for tasting and purchase. This area will serve as the 'Cellar Door Sales' for the vineyard, where customers can experience the wine firsthand.
The design of the new building prioritizes accessibility and aims to blend seamlessly with the rural surroundings. The low-level design will ensure minimal disruption to the landscape, while large windows will provide visitors with panoramic views of the vineyards. The aesthetic of the structure is carefully planned to maintain a traditional agricultural feel, in keeping with the heritage of the farm and its location.
In phase two of the project, the existing Dutch Barn will be transformed into the winery's production area. Initially, the vineyard's grapes will be sent off-site for processing and bottling. However, with the completion of this phase, the winery will be able to process and bottle its wine on-site, enhancing the business's self-sufficiency.
As part of the development, a greenhouse and kitchen garden will be added, allowing for the cultivation of fresh produce that will complement the wine-tasting experience. The vineyard plans to serve locally grown fruit and vegetables, as well as honey, jams, and chutneys made on-site, further increasing profitability.
The new facilities will offer an immersive wine-tasting experience, with the option for outdoor tastings on a decking area. The building’s design incorporates large windows to maximize natural light and views of the vineyard, while minimizing the need for artificial heating.
With these plans, the Halstock Ridge Vineyard hopes to attract both wine lovers and tourists to the area, providing an exciting new addition to the local landscape. If approved, the winery will offer not only a chance to taste and purchase local wine but also an opportunity to explore the farm's other produce, making it a unique destination for anyone with a taste for quality, local produce.
